History
Seagrave WI History:
Seagrave Women’s Institute was founded in 1929 by members who included Mrs Marjorie Barker and Mrs Tyrell. The Institute has met in the Memorial Hall since it opened and will celebrate its 80th Birthday in April 2009.
Seagrave History:
One of the earliest mentions of this place is in the Domesday Book where it is listed amongst the lands given to Henry de Ferrers (aka Ferriers) by the King possibly as a result of The Battle of Hastings. The land consisted of work for 1 plough and four acres of meadow. Records on the internet indicate that a William de Ferrers 1st Lord of Groby, a descendant of Henry, married a Margaret de Segrave (aka Ellen) who died around 1316. Records also indicate hereditary links to our present day royalty and Churchill.
Village Hall History:
The village hall is undertaking refurbishment at present as it was built before current regulations such as disabled access came in. Quite a few money raising events such as car boots, auctions and “The Wolds Challenge” have been organised to support this planned extension and upgrade which generates a double whammy of financial gain and community spirit of goodwill. When finished it will ultimately benefit all who use this hall.
